Top made-in-Canada fashion trends for Spring

With the unpredictability of NAFTA, why not keep it Canadian, and shop domestic for your fashion this season? Canadian designs and brands are built for our ever-changing needs. With four seasons and extreme weather, Canadians need more staples than anyone. To keep it simple, here are the must-have Canadian fashion trends for Spring/Summer 2018.

Layer Up

Even in the warmer months, 2018 is the year to pile on the textiles. Slip a dress over a T-shirt like Brenda at West Beverly High, and top it with a faux fur vest completed with a fitted jacket. From underlays to overlays, Canadian boutiques like TNT and Mendocino literally have you covered.

Fringe Living

For Spring/Summer 2018, Canadian designer JEM of Hendrixroe showed off her personality with on-trend metallic leathers and hot pink fringe. Whether it’s a decorated bag, jacket, dress or even pants, fringe remains fabulous.

Brand Yourself

Logomania has taken over international runways, reviving graphic slogans and classic insignias. Time to bring back your LV covered Louis Vuitton or branded Gucci bag? Please, before you do this, check out the Jeremy Scott of the North: Hayley Elsaesser. In her Spring/Summer 2018 collection titled “Teenage Wasteland,” Elsaesser showed cellphone-printed shorts and “Teenage Wasteland” T-shirts. Not a new tendency for Elsaesser; the “Queen of Queen Street” is known for her bold visual imagery drawn from pop culture and a modern take on branding.

Pretty In Pink

Pastels, millennial pinks, and purples are the “it colours” for Spring/Summer 2018. Canadian designer Lesley Hampton suggests pairing your pastels with strong pieces like black leather and dark denim to achieve an “edgy elegance” this spring.

Nearly Nude

In a society that exposes everything, nude and sheer fabrics remain a strong trend for Spring/Summer 2018. How can we possibly show any less, when eveningwear is about showing as much as we possibly can? Canadian designer Stephan Caras shows us how we can bare it all in a sexy yet sophisticated manner. Models at his Spring/Summer 2018 presentation wore nude, white and pastel fabrics with cut-outs and sheer panels, embroidered beautifully to cover all the right bits and pieces.

Canada Is On The Map for High Fashion

Classic blue denim-on-denim has taken over international runways. Never out of style on our soil, the Canadian tuxedo has garnered worldwide fame. Known for creating one-of-a-kind sustainable denim pieces, Canadian designer Triarchy has mastered this look. Triarchy conquered two trends in one piece with their fringe-winged denim jacket that stole the show at their Spring/Summer 2018 presentation at RE\SET Fashion Week last September.

Accessories Are Key

Not feeling anything new this year? Stay on trend by updating your accessories. This year hats are huge and hoops are still getting unimaginably bigger and bigger in size, not just popularity. Subscribe to all the new styles, or keep it simple. Either way, fashion is meant to be fun, so enjoy!
