As the co-star of Global TV’s hit show Private Eyes, Canadian actress Cindy Sampson lights up the small screen as feisty Angie Everett, a seasoned private investigator who takes on an ex-hockey player as a junior partner (played with aplomb by Jason Priestley). Shot in Toronto, Private Eyes is getting rave reviews here and south of the border—and has opened many doors for Sampson. We caught up with the busy actress here in Toronto.
What was it like growing up in Halifax?
Growing up in Halifax was magical. I spent my youth swimming, fishing, boating and camping in the summer. The East Coast is still my favourite place on Earth.
What was your first acting gig?
My first TV gig was in Halifax on a CBC show called Street Cents. That was my part-time job in high school. So, it took over 20 long years to become a “TV star.” But it also feels like just yesterday. I’ve lived and shot in so many places; my career path has been the most amazing adventure!
You have a great sense of humour. Where does that come from?
I think my great sense of humour comes from so much rejection! And from being from such a small town. Perspective is everything and you can’t take life too seriously. I truly believe laughter keeps us young and happy.
What is your daily exercise routine?
When we’re filming Private Eyes, our days are so long there is never time to exercise. When I do have the time, I box at Big Hit, take Pilates at Lagree, spin at 6ix Cycle or do hot yoga at Moksha Yoga. I find classes much more motivating than the gym.
Any fitness tips to share?
Small changes bring big rewards, and always blast music!
Do you have a beauty regimen that you follow?
A beauty regimen only became a necessity as I got older and realized I have to take care of myself! I am very strict about face washing at the end of the day and right now I am all about Drunk Elephant products and sheet masks. However, I am a product junkie and am always trying new things. Next week, I am trying a microcurrent facial! Wish me luck on my youth journey!
Who are your favourite designers?
My favourite designers are definitely Stephen Caras and Greta Constantine. Toronto pride!!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what would you take with you?I think I would bring a book if I was stranded on an island, but after watching too many episodes of Naked and Afraid, I should probably say a fire starter.
What is a day in the life of Cindy Sampson like?
A day in the life of Cindy Sampson is BUSY and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
A day at Private Eyes usually means a 4:45 a.m. wakeup, shooting for six hours, an hour lunch with a read through or a fitting, then six more hours of work and maybe an interview or two. Then I go home and make house decisions (my husband and I are renovating) then fall asleep, wake up, wash, repeat. I love my job and everything it entails and as soon as I’m not working, I’m on vacation with my husband. I’m in a very amazing place in my life and extremely grateful for it.
How did you get the role on Private Eyes?
I got the role on Private Eyes the regular way…by auditioning. I walked in the room, Jason and I started laughing and the rest is history!
Has appearing on Private Eyes increased your exposure and opportunities?
Private Eyes has definitely increased my exposure and opportunities. I absolutely LOVE photoshoots, so it has all been really exciting in that respect. Attending film and TV festivals and press tours in other countries is a dream come true. But also being able to help (if even in the tiniest way) with charity awareness or supporting local businesses makes me really happy. So many great things have come my way and I really want to share the love and pay it forward.
What would be your ultimate dream role?
My ultimate role? Well, playing a private investigator who goes undercover is THE BEST. But, if I had to choose another role, it would be a kick-ass warrior villain… before I get too old and break a hip!
