Sexy Summer Makeup

If you want sexy summer makeup this year, the best accessory is beautiful, sexy skin. This summer, accentuate your inner glow with dewy bronzed skin, flushed cheeks and flirty lids. Here’s what you need to know to get this summer’s hottest looks.

Exfoliate, prime and then get glowing with these sexy summer makeup trends

Summer Makeup Tips
Beat the heat with these sexy summer makeup tips.

Cleanse, but not too much

Even during the heat of summer, washing your face with cleanser only once per day is enough. Wash more and you’ll strip away too much of your skin’s natural oil, which results in increasing your skin’s oil production. Simply wash your face at the end of the day to remove makeup and the build-up of impurities and dead skin cells.

Exfoliate to reveal glow

Exfoliation is the act of removing dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost layer using products or tools. Sound scary? Not to worry; there’s a huge variety of gentle, topical exfoliation products and oscillating skincare brushes that are suitable for home treatment and are super easy to use. Ideally, you should exfoliate two to three times per week (depending, of course, on your skin’s sensitivity), to remove possible sunscreen residue and dead skin. Once your skin is polished, you’re ready for makeup primer.

The Perfect Sunscreen

Beat the heat, time to prime

One of the most common questions I’m asked as a makeup artist is, “What can I do to help my foundation last all day?”  For the summer months, my answer is simple: use the fantastic 100 per cent natural sunscreen by Consonant Skincare aptly named, “The Perfect Sunscreen.”  After trying this product for the first time in 2016, I quickly discovered that, in addition to providing protection from the sun’s harmful rays, it also works incredibly well as a primer! This product aids in smoothing the appearance of the skin’s surface, producing a beautiful canvas for foundation to adhere to—and the coverage lasts all day!

Covering up in the heat

If you prefer to keep your foundation light and fresh in the heat of summer, a great tinted moisturizer can be your new BFF. Though you may need to reapply more than once as your skin may absorb the light coverage quickly, tinted moisturizers are a great way to go as they can benefit your skin with their light coverage, moisture and SPF protection.

When wearing a medium or full-coverage foundation, the heat and humidity may cause your foundation to shift within hours of application. To prevent this, try Dermalogica’s “Barrier Repair” any time of year. It shields against environmental elements and has an incredible capacity to refresh makeup that has either settled into facial lines or shifted from exposure to humidity.

Power-free shine control

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: face blotters are a MUST in the heat! They’re great for maintaining makeup applications for exterior shoots or for touching up at an event. They never leave my side.  My absolute favourite is “Blot Film” from MAC Cosmetics. The great thing about these blotters is that they remove excess oil without adding any product to the skin. For best results, press the blotter gently onto the skin, rather than wiping. This will not disturb your makeup and leaves little need for touch-ups.

Waterproof eye pencils do the trick.

Waterproof pencils

Summer heat is wonderful, but one downside for those of us in the beauty business, is that it’s hard to keep eye makeup from running in the heat. Choosing waterproof eye and lip pencils will help.  Charlotte Tilbury leads the pack with her “Rock n’ Khol” eye pencils and “Lip Cheat” pencils, both paraben-free. They glide on like butter, last up to six hours and do NOT smudge.  With a fabulous array of colours, these pencils are a MUST in both my studio and personal makeup kits.

Add Some Colour: Sexy Summer Makeup Trends

DEWY, BRONZED SKIN IS IN in a big way this summer. To get the look, apply your bronzer to the high points of your face, such as the forehead, top of the cheeks and temples. With a lighter hand, bronze the nose and chin. Instead of adding luminizer or highlighter, simply use less powder to set your makeup, touching up when needed between the brows, nose tip, cheek folds and chin crease.

GET CHEEKY with your makeup this summer by adding brighter blush to your life. If you’re looking for some extra radiance, topping up those cheeks with a dab of clear gloss will lend a youthful glimmer to your complexion.

PUMP UP THE GLOSS on your…eyelids? Absolutely! Some of your favourite makeup brands also carry cream eyeshadows along with their popular powdered shadows—and for good reason! A tiny bit of cream eyeshadow delivers a flirty flair to the eyelids. Accentuate this playful trend by coupling it with clear gloss.
