Blepharoplasty is one of the most common facial plastic surgery procedures performed worldwide. The goal is to restore a more youthful look to the eyes. The surgery can be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure involves removing skin, fat and sometimes muscle in an effort to open up the eyes. The procedure can be performed for both cosmetic reasons as well as functional reasons, such as when the eyelids interfere with vision.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY TAKE AND DO I NEED AN ANAESTHETIC?

Upper eyelid surgery generally takes about one hour. If you combine both upper and lower eyelids, this generally takes two to three hours. Sometimes upper eyelids can be performed under a local anesthetic. However, if combining both upper and lower eyelids, sedation is generally used.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME FOR EYELID SURGERY?

The recovery time is usually one to two weeks, however, some people can be bruised longer than this. Using ice packs and sleeping with your head elevated will help reduce the swelling. Most people are able to return to the gym within three to four weeks. The final results can take several weeks or months to be seen.

WILL THE EYELID SURGERY SCAR BE NOTICEABLE?

Generally, the scars following a blepharoplasty are hidden within the normal crease lines of the eyes, however, there is a risk the scars may be noticeable.

IF I LOSE WEIGHT, WILL THE BAGS UNDER MY EYES DISAPPEAR?

As you age, the skin of the eyelids stretches and the muscles begin to weaken. This allows the fat pad around the eyelids to bulge. Unfortunately, weight loss has no effect on these fat pads.

WHAT IS A CANTHOPEXY or CANTHOPLASTY?

This is a procedure related to surgery performed on the lower eyelids. Canthopexy or canthoplasty is the surgical tightening of the tendon to prevent drooping of the lower eyelid.

WILL A BLEPHAROPLASTY GET RID OF THE DARK CIRCLES UNDER MY EYELIDS?

Dark circles under the eyes are caused by numerous factors. A lower eyelid blepharoplasty may help to improve the condition but won’t get rid of it.

WHAT IS A TRANSCONJUNCTIVAL BLEPHAROPLASTY?

This procedure is when a surgeon makes an incision in the inner lining of the eye, known as the conjunctiva so that there is no external visible scar. However, only fat and no extra skin will be removed through this type of incision

WHAT IS A subciliary BLEPHAROPLASTY?

A subciliary blepharoplasty involves an incision made just below the eyelashes. Through this incision, both fat and extra skin can be removed however there is a risk of a visible scar.

WILL I LOOK DIFFERENT AFTER EYELID SURGERY?

As with any cosmetic procedure, the goal should be to look refreshed, not different. However, with lower eyelid surgery there is a very slight risk that the position of the lower eyelids may change.

WILL THIS GET RID OF THE Crow’s Feet OR WRINKLES AT THE CORNER OF MY EYES?

A Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) will not remove the crow’s feet from the corner of your eyes. This can be treated with laser resurfacing or injectables.

WHAT IS THE COST?

The cost of surgery varies, depends on whether only one or both eyelids will be operated on. Generally, the price runs in the $4,000-$8,000 dollar range.
