The 5 Hottest Looks For Your Hair

Wet n’ wild and other must-try hair trends this spring

Wet n’ wild

One of the season’s hottest trends is the shiny, wet look! We saw a bit of this sprinkled here and there in 2016, but slicked-back, wet-looking hair was probably the biggest trend on the 2017 spring runways, showing up on over seven catwalks at New York Fashion Week. While Thakoon opted for a gelled back top-knot and Balmain with a deep, slick, side part, it was Stella McCartney’s romantic, swept-back style that will put that spring in your step as you take this top trend to the streets! What I love about this look is that it doesn’t require a lot of effort, product or time; something all my clients love hearing!

HOW TO: For Stella McCartney’s take on wet n’ wild, simply take horizontal sections of your hair, starting at the crown and round brush sections backwards. Use a dry shampoo
or a root-lifting powder at the roots and finish by raking back your hair with a small drop of oil on your fingers. Spray with a flexible or soft hold hairspray.

Hair Jewelry

Another hot trend seen on fashion week runways was hair accessories! The return of the barrette is upon us! Dolce & Gabbana took the trend to a whole new level as their models showed off full-on crowns and drop-dead gorgeous headpieces with giant jewels and drooping gems; perhaps not for the office, but it would a great piece to have for that selfie at home! For a more street-friendly approach, look to Fendi or Bottega Veneta. Bright coloured baubles were scattered through the hair adding a fun90s vibe at the Fendi show, while Bottega Veneta opted for black, metallic statement pieces with hair tucked gently behind the ear.

HINT: Barrettes are back, but not the colourful, plastic ones you remember snapping into your hair as a kid. It’s all about big, metallic, show-stopping pieces this season!

Au-Naturel

Spring or not, mornings are tough. Luckily one trend that everyone can get behind is undone, natural-looking hair. You’ll notice I said natural “looking.” Unless you were blessed with that always-perfect beach wave; the easy, sexy, “I woke up like this“ look still takes some effort. But just a little.

HOW TO: Take big sections of hair and wrap around a wand or curling iron, away from the face. Don’t hold too long as you don’t want a full curl; more of a bend just to add some texture. Spray some dry shampoo on your roots for a little volume and shake out your strands. Think Blake Lively at the People’s Choice Awards. Or, for a wilder version, think: the Alexander Wang 2017 spring show. Tuck one or both sides behind your ears to really show off that glowing spring smile!

The Centre Part

Amy Adams and Priyanka Chopra rocked this look at the Golden Globes earlier this year, and JLo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Blake Lively and other celebs donned the look at the People’s Choice Awards. It’s an easy trend to try and I’m sure you’ll be shocked at how a simple part in the hair can change the way your face and bone structure appear!

Hint: Try a metal tail comb to get a nice, clean part!

Leather Tied Pony

The next hair accessory you have to try is the belted or banded ponytail. My personal favourite was the leather-banded pony at the Brandon Maxwell show. It’s fun and flirty, which is what spring is all about. The black leather tie at the base of the ponytail is a little reminiscent of the dark winter we just emerged from, while the flirty pony adds a bit of carefree innocence.

Hint: This versatile accessory adds a great touch to pretty much ANY look!
